No 3: Time of the Month

Today I woke up with periods on my mind.  Metaphorically speaking.

And it got me thinking how little I know about those, too.

Bullet 4

  • Period – Aka the decorators are in. That time of the month when a woman (or girl) has her menstrual flow.  During the cycle the lining of the uterus builds up to get ready for pregnancy.  If pregnancy’s not on the cards, the uterus cleverly sheds its lining and the tissue and blood flow out of the body. Through the vagina.  Eeeeeew.

As it turned out, I was the last of my friends to get my period.  This came as a big surprise as, apparently, I looked like I would be the first.  I never did understand that logic, though it might have been because I was big boned.

One of the most challenging decisions I had to make at that time was whether to use a Tampax, Lilette or pad.  Pads, as I was to learn, were the starter kit and considered uncool.  Plus, they were bulky and mis-shaped your knickers.

Tampax had an applicator and who knew what to do with that? Flushing was not an option, as they would float back up – they were floaters, in the non-poop sense of the word.

And so, I became a Lilette girl.  One flush and it was gone, wrapper and all.

One of my fondest childhood memories was of my mum showing me how to use them.

Like an air hostess.

“Leg up on chair, turn to the right (leg not you), and insert.”

It was funny, particularly if you knew her.

My great concern, always, was leaving one up there.  Not only would it be hard to reach and not for the big-fingered, but it was dangerous too. I don’t recall ever doing that, but Julia Sotheby from Class A did, and she nearly died.

Looking back, I would say that my period years were not too gruelling and, overall, I led a happy Lilette life.

I am grateful for that – and for having been young, fun and fertile.

If only I’d appreciated it back then.

What’s It All About?

I always thought that by the time I reached my 50s, I would be sorted – confident, wise, accepting of who I was and what I looked like, and maybe even love myself a little. Instead, I have been moody, mad and miserable – or

No 1: I Resign

Today I woke with a start, sat bolt upright, and cried and cried and cried. This was not a good way to start the day and I decided that I would like to resign. Not from my job.  From the menopause.  It was too hard,

No 2: Bite-Sized Portions

Today I have bright eyes and a bushy tail. Being bright-eyed and bushy-tailed is far from my norm and when it occurs, I am thrilled.  In celebration, I ate a small chocolate croissant – un pain au chocolat.  Pains au chocolat are my favourite mainly
